Two Networks, One Brain

The brain runs on two distinct networks that are constantly competing for our attention. Understanding them is the foundation of sense foraging.

The Habit Network

Our rapid problem-solving network — built from experience and repetition. It runs on autopilot, making quick decisions based on past patterns. Efficient and familiar, but prone to locking us into the House of Habit when life changes.

The Sensory Network

Devoted to fresh, present-moment input. When active, this network takes in what is actually happening — not what we expect to happen. It is the source of creativity, plasticity, new ideas, and genuine change.

The House of Habit

Our mental routines lock us into a House of Habit, causing life to lose its spark. When we are stressed or stuck, we instinctively try harder — doubling down on the same mental habits that made us feel stuck in the first place.

Neuroscience research shows that feeling overwhelmed is actually linked to a reduction in sensory processing, not an overload. When overwhelmed, the brain inhibits sensory input and focuses on threat management — narrowing our world further.

The solution is not to think differently. It is to sense differently.

"Sensation is literally how new information enters the mind."

What is Sense Foraging?

Sense foraging is the practice of intentionally engaging with sensation — welcoming its ability to update our models of the world. It is the thin edge of the wedge: by recognising that sensing is not thinking, we preserve space for fresh experience in a mind overrun by concepts and mental habits.

01

Pause

Pause the habit network. Notice that you are running on autopilot.

02

Sense

Turn attention to what you see, hear, or feel — right now, in this moment.

03

Forage

Explore your senses. Welcome surprise: the novel, unfamiliar, and uncertain.

04

Integrate

Let new sensory input shift your brain's metabolism — and open new possibilities.
